Baseball mechanics have been getting studied from the beginning of the game to now. Obviously we have gotten much more technical and advanced with this study with new technologies that are able to produce data today. Players and coaches figuring out pitching mechanics and elite throwing movements is much more apparent today compared to hitting with the number of pitchers that are throwing the ball 100mph today.
But what about hitters? Are hitters keeping up? The short answer is: no, many hitters mechanics are are not competing with the mechanics of the throwers. I am unsure on the average big league batting average but I’m sure it must be somewhere around .230! This is obscured considering just 10 years ago we were praising the guys who could hit over .300. If you watch the game today, it seems like the art of hitting above .300 has been lost by most.
The art of hitting .300 has been lost by most, but not totally. There are a select few hitters that are still hitting for average, and all of these guys have elite swinging mechanics.
Elite swinging mechanics are rare. Good swinging mechanics are not. There are many good hitters in the big leagues today, but there are only a few “elite” hitters in the big leagues today. There are many things that go into being a good hitter like a good plan, good approach, mental toughness. What we must all understand is most of the professional players have a good plan, good approach, and extremely mental tough to be able to succeed and get to where they are. What separates most of the pros from the elite pros?
You guessed it, hitting mechanics and proper technique. Hitting is already hard, elite mechanics make hitting a little less hard. Over the course of a long baseball season and night after night of competing, the guys who have figured out how to make hitting a little less hard, are the guys that will put themselves into an “elite” category!
As a young kid, it is important to find the correct mechanics and technique. This may be what sets you apart from other hitters one day. Our goals should always be to increase my chances at success even when things aren’t perfect. In baseball, things are not perfect quite often. The question boils down to: “can you succeed when things aren’t perfect”. You enhance these chances by working on your swinging mechanics and perfecting your swinging movements.
At The U, we take an holistic approach to mechanics and we search for the athletes natural way to swing and throw. This can only be done by really studying our hitters and throwers movements in detail. Once we assess the athletes and discover why certain athletes move the way they do, it is easier to give those athletes a customized set of commands to clean up inefficient movements. Our goal after the process is to not every have a swinging or throwing mechanic be what limits the athlete’s ability to continue to climb levels in the game of baseball.
